United Building Company, Inc. (“UBC”), expanding on the success of its predecessors, American Community Home Builders (“ACHB”) and United Community Builders (“UCB”), is dedicated to building high quality, multifamily housing for the next generation. Our Leadership team combined has over 130 years of expertise constructing buildings that feature innovative architecture in environmentally friendly, energy efficient, developments throughout the Los Angeles area and beyond.
Mark Walther
President of the Company, has been active in multifamily housing since 1987 and, since 2002, he has held a California General Contractor License. After 13 years in housing finance, Mr. Walther co-founded American Communities in 2000, as well as both ACHB and UCB. These companies have developed and built 21 properties with 1,143 multifamily units throughout Los Angeles. A graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara, Mark also holds a law Degree from the University of California, Davis. Mr. Walther along with his wife Michelle, who is active at UBC, are philanthropically involved throughout Los Angeles; he currently serves as President of the Getty House Foundation which is dedicated to community engagement and the preservation of Getty House, the official residence of the Mayor of Los Angeles. Mr. Walther also sits on the Advisory Council of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust. Mark and Michelle are the proud parents of two wonderful teenage boys living in the South Bay area.
Richard Spunt
Executive Vice President of the Company. Mr. Spunt has been an executive in the construction and architectural field for over 27 years with experience in all aspects of estimating, purchasing, contracts, management, preconstruction, construction documents, design build, finance and operations. Before joining UBC and its predecessors 8 years ago, Mr. Spunt, co-founded E & R Construction & Management. Mr. Spunt has built a range of products including office, retail, government and multifamily projects ranging in size from 10,000 to 400,000 square feet. Mr. Spunt is an active California General Contractor’s License holder, as well as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) Accredited Professional. Richard is married, lives in Granada Hills and along with his wife, are the proud parents of two young girls, ages 12 and 8.
Bob Hildebrand
Director of Construction, brings a lifetime of construction expertise to the Company. From building cement factories in Iran to tract home subdivisions in the San Fernando Valley, Bob has been active in construction for over 40 years, Mr. Hildebrand in his prior employ oversaw the development and construction of more than 20,000 apartment units and 5,000 single family homes. Mr. Hildebrand is a licensed General Contractor in the states of California (since 1982) and Hawaii (since 1985) and is on the advisory Board of the National Multifamily Housing Conference. Bob obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Temple University in 1967. Bob is the proud parent of 5 sons, 2 of whom attended West Point and served proudly in the US military, with distinction. Bob enjoys being a father and grandfather in his spare time.
Ronald Mayhew
Director of Community Relations, brings to the Company thirty years of experience in construction from three perspectives: public agency representation, private engineering and as an owner of multifamily housing. Previously Mr. Mayhew served as a Vice President of Casden Properties in Beverly Hills, for 18 years where he was active in all aspects of the development process from site acquisitions and design, to public hearing presentations for major residential and mixed-use projects throughout Los Angeles. Thereafter, Mr. Mayhew served as a Vice President of Security Capital (now Archstone) in Atlanta, Georgia, for 4 years building residential apartment complexes throughout the southern states. Mr. Mayhew has a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning from California State Polytechnic University Pomona. Ron is the parent of 3 children, a proud grandfather and a fan of vintage cars. Ron lives in Los Angeles near the Grove.
